I must have heard that said a hundred times when I was a schoolboy - I was a bagpiper in the St Andrew's College Pipe Band in Grahamstown, South Africa. I was Pipe Major for two years, which meant that it was my privilege to play the lament ("Flowers of the Forest") at the various War Memorial Parades that were held in our town. I say "privilege", because at the time it seemed almost more of a chore than anything else. It has only been as an adult that I have really come to appreciate the incredible bravery and sacrifice of the men and women who fought against one of the most terrible evils the world has ever known. As I look back on those parades (usually in sweltering weather, with our band kitted out in full Highland regalia), I wish that I had been more aware of exactly what we were doing downtown on those hot Sunday mornings. If we place any price on our freedom at all, we owe it as much to the living as to the dead to remember them. -Steve
